Nursing Humor: A Guide For The Layperson

Bruno Auger asked:

Work in medical fields can be both physically and emotionally draining. Nurses are often subjected to things that most other people don’t deal with on a daily basis. This is the reason for the development of nursing humor, which is a special type of humor that is often only understood and appreciated by others in medical or health-related fields.

There are many jokes surrounding the interaction between medical personnel or even nurses and patients. These jokes don’t usually contain offensive language; however, they may present the nurse as less compassionate or even unprofessional. Nurses are taught to be kind when dealing with patients and families, but they are human, too. Sharing jokes like this allows physicians or nurses to put a positive light on the negative aspect of their job and cope with patients and situations better.

Medical humor is very unique – it defines medical terms in many different ways. Take for example, a liquid substance known as barium, used in radiology tests. According to certain nurse jokes on the web, the definition of barium can also be defined as the job of an undertaker. Nurses know this humor is beyond the normal experience of a layperson and usually avoid this medical terminology humor so that nobody is offended.

Most nursing websites have a forum thread dedicated especially to funny occurrences, or to nursing humor. This offers an outlet for those jokes that are just too funny not to be shared. Frequently, these jokes are also spread through email or handouts available at nursing stations. There are even a few Internet sites dedicated entirely to nurse humor, and many dedicated to expressions of general medical humor as well.

Nursing humor sometimes is concerning issues that only those in the medical field would understand and fully appreciate. These inside jokes might be about things related to the specific institution where they work. These are usually shared within the field and jokes related to things such as insurance problems or government sponsored health care are shared with family members and friends.

If you have a friend or family member that is a nurse you can probably remember hearing many tales of nursing humor. Most nurses resort to this dry humor to cope with the life and death issues they face daily. Check out a few of the websites that offer this type of humor. Read these bits as if you are nurse and you will have a better understanding of the humor

Laugh When It Hurts – Using Humor to Cope with the Downturn

Mary Lloyd asked:

ght (c) 2009 Mary Lloyd

The time it’s most important to be able to laugh is when things look worst. Economic downturns can get pretty bleak when you’re trying to stretch a fixed income or watching hard-earned dollars wither as investments. But this really is the time to remember how to laugh. Humor can be incredibly therapeutic.

Before we go any farther, there’s an important distinction to make as to the kind of humor I’m advocating here. The only person you should be laughing AT is yourself. At your foibles, your shortcomings, your predicament. It’s all fodder for jokes if you are the one making them.

However, laughing at other people isn’t therapeutic. It’s mean. Also juvenile and short on creative genius. All the great comedians know this, but you don’t have to do stand up to benefit from that insight. Laugh with other people. Laugh at yourself–even if you are looking at bankruptcy, foreclosure, or having to live with your impossibly messy younger brother because of this pesky economic downturn.

Why?

Because laughter really is good medicine. Norman Cousins was facing an incurable spine disease when he chose this strategy. Instead of staying in the hospital, he moved to a hotel and administered dose after dose of humor to himself every day in the form of classic movie comedies. He wrote about the experience in Anatomy of an Illness, reporting that if he laughed for three hours in the morning, he would be pain free the rest of the day. Laughter can be even more effective with emotional pain.

So find some ways to laugh. Martha Beck dedicates a whole chapter to laughter in The Joy Diet–and her writing is definitely laugh therapy. As one option, she suggests silliness. I am so pleased. I’ve been a personal fan of silliness my whole life, but it gets a really bad rap. Silliness in this culture is construed as flightiness, naiveté, and a lack of appreciation for the seriousness of the situation. What a waste of a good tool.

Silliness can do more to help you let go of intense emotions than anything else you can do upright. Silliness requires that you relinquish your problem, at least temporarily, to the ridiculousness of the moment. That’s why my brothers spent their time in the waiting room while Dad was having quadruple bypass surgery inventing a goofy card game with impossible rules. That’s why I cross my eyes when I can catch a friend’s attention in the middle of a long-winded presentation.

Silly is not just for kids. It’s your right and responsibility. Do something silly today and make the world a better place.

One way to be silly when times are tight is with games that make cutting back more fun. At one point when my then husband and I were coping with an economic gap, we started a contest to see who could use their paper lunch bag more times. Right, the idea is to be able to throw them away when you are done with your lunch. But how much fun is that? He won–I think he made it all the way to the fourth week, something like 21 consecutive lunches out of that same bag. Mine developed a terminal tear on Day 16. Dang.

There are benefits beyond the fun to this kind of silliness. Have you noticed that “going green” and saving money often involve the same behaviors? “Use it up. Wear it out. Recycle it.” is good for both the environment and the pocketbook. And if you can find fun ways to do it, it’s also good for your sense of well-being.

If you are willing to work on it, you can learn to laugh at nothing. Just “Ha ha has” for the therapeutic value it offers. There are clubs that meet to do this. Really. I haven’t progressed this far. Even when I try to just laugh, I end up thinking about something funny and laugh harder.

You’ll have your own style on this, for sure. But only if you put some effort into developing it. “Style” requires action. Refining and polishing your sense of humor is a great action step for a downturn. Beck advocates at least thirty laughs a day and recommends a hundred. (Did THAT make you laugh?)

When things look awful, find a way to laugh. It can change your mood in a heartbeat, costs only the energy it takes to do it, and has no negative side effects. Maybe we should make it our first treatment for everything–even before a band-aid.

Breast Cancer Survivor’s Guide to Humor

Janine Broderick asked:

received the devastating news, Maha El-Sabaawi stood helplessly as she watched her life and dreams come to a halt. There was little she could do as her body froze with emotion. Maha knew her life would never be the same after she was diagnosed with a rare form of advanced breast cancer.

Maha came to Canada from Saudi Arabia as a child and before settling in London, Ontario with her family she briefly stayed in Toronto where she was diagnosed with cancer. For the past two years, the 26-year-old has been fighting an arduous battle with not only her health, but also regaining her life and identity as a young woman who has undergone a double mastectomy.

During her recovery process, Maha discovered she had a passion for acting in front of a camera. Tying in her passion for celebrity gossip, she began creating humorous parodies of popular television shows and celebrities. After uploading her videos onto the Internet and creating her own Web site, celebrityfling, Maha gained a large cult following of users who were charmed by her vivacious personality and well-scripted characters.

Maha began posting her media on talent Web sites, and right away the users embraced her magnetism and recognized her incredible talent. Maha continues to create and film new shorts, all the while facing obstacles on the road to regaining her health. Her illness has not dampened her positive spirit though. “My attitude is growing stronger every day. I am unstoppable,” she proclaims in her online biography.

Though Maha has defied the odds, breast cancer is a growing epidemic. This was once a disease that was thought to only plague elderly women. However women of any age are at risk to this type of cancer. Specialists are not positive what the reasons are for breast cancer forming in certain people. But, according to the National Cancer Institute, research has led many to believe there are certain risk factors that may attribute to developing breast cancer.

Some risk factors include: family history, personal history, and race. Family history of breast cancer raises the risk of women in the same family developing the disease. It has been noted that if there is a family history of breast cancer with the woman obtaining the cancer before the age of 40, the woman’s family members are susceptible at a younger age.

When women already have had a previous case of breast cancer, it is very likely the cancer will reoccur in the other breast. This is evident in Maha’s experience. The cancer only appeared in one breast and was promptly removed, however, the cancer reappeared in her other breast. To reduce the risk of breast cancer reforming, many women opt to have a mastectomy or a double mastectomy.

What Does Humor Have to do With Health?

Lynn Powers asked:

With April Fools day the first of the month, it’s no wonder April has been named National Humor month. Personally, I love it. Anything designed to make me laugh is fine with me! I say, bring on the humor!

Research shows that children laugh a whopping 400 times per day while the number of times adults engage in some type of laughter or humorous situation is a mere 15. No wonder Jesus told us to “be like little children.” He wants us to laugh more!

Not only is laughing just plain fun, it’s good for you! There have been many scientific reports on the benefits of laughter, but we don’t need science to tell us that. The Bible has been informing us for thousands of years. As it says in Proverbs 17:22, “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” (NIV)

Here are some ways laughing is beneficial for both physical and mental health:

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

• It’s good for your Heart – When you laugh, you’re taking your insides for a jog. In fact, some research has shown that a good belly laugh is equivalent to several minutes on a stationary bike or rowing machine. Besides exercising your abdomen and diaphragm, you’re also giving your back and facial muscles an aerobic workout.

• Lowers Blood Pressure. It seems that many people with high blood pressure are often tense and serious. But lightening up a bit by laughing can lower that number. This isn’t to say you should trade in your blood pressure medication for a stack of comedy DVD’s. But laughing sends oxygen enriched blood and nutrients through your system which will certainly help to bring those numbers down even more.

• Boosts Immune System. Laughter produces antibody-producing cells that help to keep you healthy. Laughing continuously during flu season, then, is a great idea!

MENTAL BENEFITS

• Relaxation. Laughing relaxes all of your muscles, releasing pent-up tension from your body. Try it after a particularly tense-filled day at work or home.

• Distraction from Pain. If you’re experiencing pain, laughter can help to take your mind off your circumstances and provide some temporary relief. In fact, it can even reduce the actual pain because laughing releases endorphins that are just as effective as equivalent doses of morphine!

• Improves Thinking Skills. When you laugh, both sides of your brain are affected. This improves comprehension and your ability to learn, which suggests that kids who laugh a lot will do better in school. Engage your child in a tickling session every evening. It just may be the thing you’re looking for to see your child’s grades improve!

• Reduces Stress. Laughter boosts serotonin which, in turn, can ward off depression and anxiety or simply help to lift your spirits and turn around a bad mood.

So the more you laugh, the healthier you’ll be and the better you’ll feel. The best part is that laughter is contagious. If you have a hard time finding things to laugh about, hang around with funny people or those who you see laughing a lot throughout the day. Soon you’ll find yourself laughing along and reaping the benefits that come with it.

With the availability of hundreds of these products to choose from today, it certainly makes it even much harder for us consumers to choose the best product to whiten tooth without laser dental treatments. Virtually every of these whitening products sold as over-the-counter whitening systems now offer people free teeth whitening trial sample offers to try out their new products before buying it. This leaves us the consumers/customers standing out to benefit from their free trials offers online. We all tend to like free stuffs; don’t you? It’s natural and nature for you.

Would you prefer to keep risking your oral health trying out all sorts of free stuffs to whiten your teeth at home that you do not even know where its manufactured from of from a third or even 5th world country they imported them (for few Pennies) and now scamming us to get their free trial samples in order to deceive you to start using their whitening/teeth bleaching products?

I don’t know about you, but I certainly will never put any teeth whitener product to whiten my teeth that I don’t know the country it is produced and if their tooth whitener system has been clinically tested and certified to be good for home use! So why keep wasting you precious life on free whitening stuffs just to find affordable and cheap teeth whitening products online, when you can get a specific product that is highly recommended by lots of dentists and commonly used by popular celebrities and millions of people in both the UK and in USA?

Always go for the best available product like the Dazzle White Pro free teeth whitening trial samples that has to date, no established record of causing teeth irritation and sensitivity to millions of people using Dazzle White Pro from various countries.

Always read a couple of teeth whitening reviews to help you decide if a particular product/solution is good enough to whiten your teeth at home. Most of the reviews and satisfied customers stories about a specific product for whitening stained and yellow tooth you’ll find online, are written by ordinary people that have used that procedure before and it worked fine for them

As I said before, I don’t know about you; so you might as well go for unreliable tooth whitener kits with free trial offers you can easily find all over the internet today. Just be readily prepared to bear the side effects of teeth whitening at home products that are not clinically tested and approved by credible recognized authorities.

For me, I always go for free offers and trial promotions that is guaranteed to work for you or my money back. That’s why I personally prefer and recommend Dazzle White’s pro gel that is manufactured in America (not from any third world or cheap labour county for few Cents) using only FDA certified teeth bleaching/whitening agents to guarantee the quality of product am using for whitening my teeth.

If you’d rather prefer to make yourself ‘a sacrificial and experimental cow’ for testing out unreliable and ineffective whitening methods/systems, always read the that product teeth whitening review online to ensure that there are other few people that have used the same product in the past. By going through few reviews online, you can quantify the amount of risk you’ll be taking to whiten your teeth at home with unpopular products with free trails offers online!
